In 1960, a little-known singer from Modena, Italy had given up on his voice. He was an opera singer who had trained in the famous bel canto system and was modestly successful. But he had developed a few vocal problems and was finding performing increasingly stressful. So he decided to quit. He had one more performance contract to fulfill before finding other employment. But as fate would have it, he sang that final performance and discovered his true potential. He didn’t quit, and he went on to become one of the most adored and successful opera singers of the 20th Century. You might have heard his name - Luciano Pavarotti.
On July 7 1990, Pavarotti and two other tenors, José Carreras and Placido Domingo, gave a concert at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome with an orchestra led by Zubin Mehta. The concert marked the recovery from leukemia and re-entrance into opera of José Carreras. It also sparked my interest in singing. I had no idea how to develop my voice - or even that voice teachers existed. I had a foundation in piano, having had lessons starting at the age of eight and performing on a weekly basis for my church. In college I added wind instruments to my growing list of musical skills. But over time, the passion to sing won, and I briefly performed on the professional stage.
I soon found that helping others find the music they didn’t realize was inside them became an even bigger passion for me. I have learned that becoming a confident and dynamic musician who enjoys sharing the gift of music with friends and family or even audiences of thousands is not reserved for only the ridiculously talented. You can achieve musical success. I’m here to help.
