Johann Sebastian Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 1

Bach is one of the most important composers in the history of western concert music. His music set the standard for subsequent harmonic practice. In other words, composers after Bach have traditionally considered the chord structures of Bach to be the highest model to emulate.

Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos are commonly thought of as some of the highest quality music ever written.

In this recording the group Ars Lyrica Houston uses instruments that would have been used in Bach’s time rather than modern instruments. Notice as well the harpsichord. The piano was not invented until the early 19th century.
