Rolf Smedvig (1953-2018) was an American trumpet player and band leader. He established the renowned Empire Brass Quintet in 1975, a group of five brass players that toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe, gaining a large and devoted following among the classical music community. Smedvig was also a founding member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra's brass section, and served as the principal trumpet from 1996 to 2011. He was an outspoken advocate for music education and was a popular and beloved figure in the Boston community. He passed away in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of great artistic achievement and passionate advocacy of music.
