Chopin’s Nocture, Op 27, No 2

Maria João Pires is a Portuguese classical pianist who is renowned for her outstanding musicality and exceptional technique. She began playing the piano at five years of age and was accepted into the National Conservatory of Lisbon at the age of seven. She then went on to study with Clotilde Rosa at the Gulbenkian Foundation and with Karl Engel at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where she graduated with highest honors.

Pires has gained a reputation for her profound interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms. She has performed with many of the world’s most prominent orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. She is also known for her commitment to contemporary music, having commissioned a number of works from composers such as Arvo Pärt and Sofia Gubaidulina. Pires has been awarded numerous prizes and accolades throughout her career, including the Portuguese Order of Merit in 2006 and the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal in 2018.
